Rain data coming in with new MRR

A major step forward in the Danish-Swedish Interreg project Opti-SITE! En MRR, Micro Rain Radar, är nu installerad på taket till Aalborg universitet, och har börjat leverera data.

An MRR, Micro Rain Radar, has now been installed on the roof of Aalborg University and has started delivering data. The new radar, MRR, will be used in Aalborg for up to a year to reliably capture seasonal variations. It complements the X-band radar that has already been in place on the university’s roof. Together, the two radars, combined with traditional gauges around the city, provide excellent coverage of Aalborg and, consequently, high-quality data on when, where, and how it rains.

Søren Thorndahl at Aalborg University says:

We are very pleased that the MRR radar is now installed. The radar gives us important information about how rain varies vertically in the atmosphere before it reaches the ground. It measures the fall speed and size of raindrops, and within the Opti-SITE project, together with X-band radars covering a larger area, it will improve rainfall measurements over cities.

The Opti-SITE project is developing a methodology to identify suitable areas for implementing nature-based stormwater solutions in our dense urban environments.
