Encouraging News from Water Wise Societies: Funding Granted for New Projects

“The Water-Smart Society’s Recycled Water System” and “From Analog to Digital in the World of Microbes” have been awarded funding, with project leadership from RISE and Sweden Water Research, alongside two other projects in which we are participants but not primary actors.

The Water-Smart Society’s Recycled Water System aims to explore how recycled water and alternative water sources can be integrated into a sustainable and resilient water supply. Together with leading actors from three Swedish clusters in Skåne, Gothenburg, and Uppsala, we can address cutting-edge development questions by basing our work on actual, identified challenges.

The project is led by Lina Lindahl at RISE in close collaboration with Ellen Edefell at Sweden Water Research. Other project partners include Chalmers, VA SYD, Region Skåne, Kretslopp och vatten, Gryaab, Uppsala Vatten, and Cytiva, as well as stakeholders such as NSVA, Boliden, Befesa, Sysav, Statkraft, Uppsala Municipality, Region Kalmar, Adven, and IKEA Industry.

From Analog to Digital in the World of Microbes tackles the need to transition from slow, analog analysis methods to rapid, digital methods for monitoring microbial status in drinking water and other water sources. This cross-sector initiative covers the entire development process, from technology to policy and legislation, to introduce modern analysis methods for water quality control.

Project leaders are Jesper König and Ellen Edefell at Sweden Water Research. Additional partners include Norrvatten, Sydvatten, SYVAB, Lund University, the Swedish Food Agency, and the National Veterinary Institute (SVA), with stakeholders such as the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), VA SYD, VIVAB, and Svenskt Vatten.

In addition to these two projects, we are involved in several other projects in various capacities, such as “Reducing Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Industrial and Municipal Water Treatment” and “ONE WATER – Sustainable Local System Transformation for Global Application (EHLSA),” which have also received funding.

Water Wise Societies is one of five strategic innovation programmes within Impact Innovation. Impact Innovation is an actor-driven, long-term initiative aimed at enhancing global competitiveness through transformation for sustainable development. This initiative is backed by the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, and Vinnova.
