Community of Practice N2O meeting at Käppala WWTP April 21, 2026

CoP N2O Sweden held its fourth meeting on Tuesday 21 April, at Käppala WWTP.

There was considerable interest in the meeting. 18 people from 11 organisations attended in person, whilst a further 10 people and 7 organisations joined digitally. Erika Forsén, development engineer at the Käppala Association, was our host, and Elin Salmonsson, process engineer at the same organisation, showed us around the plant.

The CoP’s management team – Erika, Kristina Stark Fujii (Stockholm Water and Waste), Karin Davidsson (Gryaab) and David Gustavsson (VA SYD) – had conducted a survey prior to the meeting to gather information on various suppliers’ nitrous oxide meters. The results were presented at the meeting.

In addition, Gryaab, the Käppala Association, Stockholm Water and Waste, Uppsala Water and Waste and VA SYD, shared their experiences of their continuous measurements of nitrous oxide emissions. David Gustavsson also spoke about the recent procurement process for measurement equipment for the Ellinge Wastewater Treatment Plant in Eslöv. Erika also told us about the CFD model that has been created on one of the bioreactors to trace N2O emissions.

Six different organisations in the CoP network applied for grants for measurement equipment from Klimatklivet, Swedish EPa fund for local climate investments, during the latest application round, but none have received a response regarding approval or rejection yet.

We were also told about the latest news from Denmark via Pernille Højmark Hansen at Envidan, who previously worked at Unisense Environment. Legislation on nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment plants is finally expected to be introduced this year.

Unfortunately, Amanda Lake from Jacobs was ill. Otherwise, she would have updated us on the situation in the UK.
